The 17th Biennale of Sydney will close on August 1 and with two years to wait until the next event – make sure the next two weeks count and smother yourself in the best contemporary art the world has to offer.
My pick of the crop is SuperDeluxe@Artspace, the effortlessly cool older cousin of the Biennale.
A vibrant cultural hub and bar by night, during the day SuperDeluxe@Artspace is a gallery venue, drop-in lounge, and an orientation centre for the 17th Biennale of Sydney: The Beauty of Distance, Songs of Survival in a Precarious Age.
SuperDeluxe – Tokyo’s popular experimental performance space – is making its debut visit to Australia, having been established in central Tokyo in 2002 as a venue for experimental music, art, culture and independent ideas.
In its Sydney reincarnation, SuperDeluxe@Artspace celebrates Japanese, Australian and world culture with an electric mix of local and international performers, including some of Japan’s leading acts.
SuperDeluxe@Artspace has already presented a dynamic program of DJs, sound artists, dancers, music, films and the popular PechaKucha Nights, and will continue to do so until the Biennale’s close on Sunday August 1. The exciting 12-week program has been co-curated by SuperDeluxe Tokyo, KDa, Namaiki, Joni Waka, Artspace and the Biennale of Sydney.
Thursday PechaKucha Nights are informal and fun gatherings where people get together and present their ideas, works, thoughts, passions, quirky collections and just about anything else.
Friday and Saturday nights host international and national performers including major DJ’s, sound artists, performers and musicians from Japan, Australia and further afield.
Sunday afternoons will present a film program curated by Jack Sargeant with David Elliott, Artistic Director, 17th Biennale of Sydney.
The SuperDeluxe@Artspace gallery is Tuesday to Sunday, 11am – 5pm. SuperDeluxe@Artspace performances, events and bar go down Thursday to Saturday nights, 7.30pm – 12am.
SuperDeluxe@Artspace is a licensed 18 y.o + venue for all evening events, so ID is required for entry.
The Biennale of Sydney promotes the responsible service of alcohol.
SuperDeluxe also hosts the Biennale Film Program on Sunday afternoons, 3pm – 5pm.
And the best news? Admission to SuperDeluxe@Artspace is FREE; however, bookings are highly recommended for all evening events to avoid disappointment. Limited entry will be available on the door each night from 8pm, subject to capacity.
